YouTube Description Generator

Fill in the parts you need. Your description is put together in the right order as you type.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

How to use the description generator

Fill in your video's title, a short summary and your main keywords. Add chapters, links, social profiles and hashtags if you have them; leave anything blank that you don't need. The description is assembled on the right in the order that works best on YouTube, with a character count and checks for common mistakes. Click Copy description and paste it into YouTube Studio.

Why the first two lines matter most

YouTube shows only the first line or two of your description, about 150 characters, before "Show more", and the same text often appears under your video in search results. Use that space for a clear sentence that says what the video is about and includes your main keyword naturally. Don't start with links, sponsor messages or a list of social profiles: they push the important information out of sight.

Chapters

Chapters split your video into sections with their own titles, shown on the progress bar. They help viewers jump to the part they need, and Google can show them as "key moments" in search results. For YouTube to create chapters from your description:

  • the first timestamp must be 0:00;
  • there must be at least three timestamps, in order;
  • each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

The generator checks these rules for you and warns if something is wrong. Write chapter names that describe the content, like "Warm up" or "Common mistakes", rather than "Part 2".

Links, hashtags and length

Put the links you mention in the video near the top, under the summary, so viewers find them quickly. YouTube shows the first three hashtags from your description above the title, and if you add more than 15 it ignores them all, so the generator keeps the list short. Descriptions can be up to 5,000 characters, but a focused description of 200 to 300 words is plenty for most videos. Avoid lists of unrelated keywords: YouTube treats keyword stuffing as spam.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a YouTube description be?

YouTube allows 5,000 characters. A focused 200 to 300 words with a strong first sentence works well for most videos.

How do I add chapters to a YouTube video?

List timestamps in the description starting with 0:00, with at least three chapters, each at least 10 seconds long. YouTube creates the chapters automatically.

How many hashtags should I use on YouTube?

Two or three. YouTube shows the first three above your title and ignores all hashtags if there are more than 15.

Do descriptions help YouTube SEO?

Yes. The description helps YouTube and Google understand the video, especially the first sentences and chapter titles.

Can I save a template for every video?

Download the description as a text file and reuse it, or paste your default links into YouTube Studio's upload defaults.
