URL Slug Generator

Paste one or more titles. Each line becomes a clean URL slug.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

How to use the slug generator

Paste a page or post title into the box. The slug, the part of the URL after the domain, appears on the right straight away. Paste a whole list of titles to convert them all at once, one slug per line, which is handy when planning a new site or a content calendar. Use the options to choose the separator, a maximum length and whether to remove small words.

What makes a good URL slug

A good slug tells people and search engines what the page is about before they click. Google shows the URL path in search results as breadcrumbs, and people share and remember short, readable links more easily. The best slugs follow a few simple rules:

  • Short and descriptive. Three to five meaningful words is usually plenty. /start-a-blog/ beats /how-to-start-a-blog-the-complete-step-by-step-guide-for-beginners/.
  • Lowercase. Some servers treat /Blog and /blog as different pages, which can create duplicates.
  • Hyphens between words. Google treats hyphens as word separators but reads underscores as joining words, so hyphens are the safer choice.
  • Plain letters and numbers. Accents, spaces and symbols are turned into codes like %C3%A9 that look messy when shared.
  • No dates unless they matter. A year in the slug makes evergreen content look outdated later. You can't easily change it without a redirect.

Options explained

Replace accents and special letters turns é into e, ß into ss, æ into ae and so on, and removes characters that don't belong in a URL. Turn it off to keep letters from other alphabets, such as Urdu or Arabic, which modern browsers support. Remove small words drops words like a, the, of and for when the slug has more than two words, which shortens it without losing meaning; check the result reads naturally. Max length cuts long slugs at a whole word.

Changing an existing URL

If a page is already published and indexed, think twice before changing its slug. The old address may have backlinks, bookmarks and rankings. If you do change it, add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one; the Bulk Redirect Generator creates the rules for you, and the Redirect Checker confirms they work.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words, while an underscore joins words together.

How long should a URL slug be?

Short enough to read at a glance, usually three to five words and under about 60 characters.

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

Often, yes, because it makes slugs shorter. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning or makes the slug hard to read.

Can slugs contain non-English letters?

Yes, browsers support them, but they appear as long codes when copied. Untick the accent option to keep them.

Is it bad to change a URL slug?

It can lose rankings if you don't redirect the old address. Always add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.
