How to crop an image
Drop an image onto the box, click it to choose a file, or paste one with Ctrl+V. A crop box appears over the image. Drag inside the box to move it, drag a corner or edge to resize it, or drag anywhere outside it to draw a new box. The size of the selection is shown in pixels as you go. When it looks right, click Crop image to see the result, then Download to save it. Your original file is never changed.
The whole crop happens inside your browser. The image isn't uploaded to a server, so personal photos, ID scans, screenshots and client work stay on your device, and even large photos crop in a moment.
Crop to a square, circle or exact shape
Pick a shape and the box keeps those proportions while you move and resize it.
| Shape | Good for |
|---|---|
| Square 1:1 | Profile pictures, Instagram posts, product photos, app icons |
| Circle | Round profile pictures and avatars, team pages, stickers |
| Portrait 4:5 | Instagram portrait posts, which take up more of the feed |
| Wide 16:9 | YouTube thumbnails, presentations, website banners, X posts |
| Story 9:16 | Instagram and Facebook Stories, Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts |
| 4:3, 3:2 and 2:3 | Prints and classic camera photo shapes |
| Link share 1.91:1 | Open Graph images for Facebook, LinkedIn and link previews |
The Circle shape saves a PNG with transparent corners, so the round picture sits cleanly on any background. If you choose JPG, the tool switches to PNG automatically, because JPG can't store transparency.
Crop to an exact pixel size
For precise work, type the Left, Top, Width and Height of the area in pixels, measured from the top-left corner of the image. With a shape selected, changing the width updates the height to match. You can also nudge the box with the arrow keys, hold Shift to move faster, and hold Alt with the arrow keys to resize.
Cropping removes pixels; it doesn't change the size of the part you keep. To get a specific final size such as 1080 × 1080, crop to the 1:1 shape first and then use the Image Resizer. To make the file smaller in kilobytes afterwards, use the Image Compressor.
Rotate and flip
Turn a sideways photo with Rotate left or Rotate right, or mirror it with Flip horizontal, which is handy for selfies that come out reversed. Photos taken on phones are shown the right way up automatically, using the orientation saved by the camera.
Formats and quality
By default the cropped image is saved in the same format as the original. PNG keeps transparency and sharp text, so use it for logos and screenshots. JPG gives small files for photos. WebP is usually smaller still and works in all current browsers. The quality slider applies to JPG and WebP; 85 to 95 percent looks identical to the original for most photos. Cropping itself doesn't reduce quality: the pixels you keep are copied exactly.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image is opened and cropped by your own browser. Nothing is sent to our server or anyone else, and the tool works offline once the page has loaded.
How do I crop an image into a circle?
Choose the Circle shape, position the circle over the face or object, and click Crop image. The result is a PNG with transparent corners, ready to use as a round profile picture.
How do I crop a photo to an exact size in pixels?
Type the width and height into the boxes under the image, then move the box into place. To end up with a fixed size such as 1080 × 1080, crop to the right shape first and then resize the result with the Image Resizer.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Cropping keeps the remaining pixels exactly as they were. With JPG and WebP a little compression is applied when saving; set the quality slider to 95 percent or choose PNG to avoid any visible change.
Can I crop a PNG and keep the transparent background?
Yes. Save as PNG or WebP and transparent areas stay transparent. Saving as JPG fills transparent areas with white.
Can I crop an iPhone HEIC photo?
Most browsers can't open HEIC files. Convert the photo to JPG first, or set your iPhone camera to Most Compatible under Settings, Camera, Formats.
