How to use the meta tag generator

Type your page title and meta description, then add the page address, a share image and your site name. The HTML on the left updates as you type, and the preview on the right shows roughly how the page will look in Google's results. When you're happy, click Copy tags and paste the code inside the <head> section of your page, replacing any old title and description tags.

Using WordPress, Shopify or another CMS? You usually don't paste code there. Copy the title and description into the SEO fields of your theme or plugin (such as Yoast, Rank Math or Shopify's "Search engine listing" box) instead.

Which meta tags actually matter

Only a few tags affect how your page appears in search and on social media. This generator creates exactly those and nothing that search engines ignore:

  • Title tag: the clickable headline in search results and the text in the browser tab. It's one of the strongest on-page signals for what a page is about.
  • Meta description: the summary under the title. It doesn't directly change rankings, but a clear, specific description earns more clicks.
  • Canonical: tells search engines the main address of the page, so copies with tracking codes or other variations don't compete with it.
  • Robots: controls whether the page may be indexed. Leave it on index unless the page should stay out of search, such as a thank-you page.
  • Open Graph and Twitter Card tags: control the title, description and image shown when someone shares your link on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, X and messaging apps.

The old meta keywords tag isn't included because Google has ignored it for more than a decade.

Writing a good title and description

Put the main topic near the start of the title and keep it under about 600 pixels, roughly 55 to 60 characters, so it isn't cut off. Make every title on your site unique. For the description, write one or two sentences that tell the searcher what they'll get and why your page is the right click, in about 120 to 160 characters. Google may still rewrite either one if it thinks other text on the page matches a search better, so make sure your page content supports what the tags promise.

Share images

Use an image of 1200 × 630 pixels for the best results on every platform. Keep important text away from the edges, because some apps crop the image to a square. The image address must be a full URL starting with https://. After publishing, you can check how your links look with the Open Graph Checker.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put meta tags?

Inside the <head> section of your page's HTML, before the closing </head> tag. In WordPress or Shopify, use the SEO fields of your theme or SEO plugin instead of editing code.

How long should a meta description be?

About 120 to 160 characters. Google cuts longer descriptions with an ellipsis, and very short ones often get replaced with text from the page.

Do meta keywords help SEO?

No. Google and Bing ignore the meta keywords tag, so this generator leaves it out.

Why does Google show a different title than mine?

Google sometimes rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords or don't match the page well. A concise, accurate title is rewritten less often.

Is this meta tag generator free?

Yes. It's free with no sign-up, and everything runs in your browser.
