How to use the Open Graph checker

Paste a page address and press Check tags. The checker fetches the page as Facebook's crawler would, reads every Open Graph tag, loads the share image to measure it, and shows approximate previews for Facebook, LinkedIn and X. A checklist below explains every missing or incorrect tag, and the tag table lists everything the page provides.

What Open Graph tags are

Open Graph is a set of meta tags, created by Facebook and now used by LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, iMessage and most other apps, that controls how a link looks when someone shares it. Without them, each app guesses: it may pick the wrong image, a menu item as the title, or show nothing but the bare link.

The essential tags

TagExample
og:titleThe headline of the preview, often the page title without the site name.
og:descriptionOne or two sentences that make people want to click.
og:imageA full https:// URL to an image of at least 1200 by 630 pixels.
og:urlThe page's preferred address, usually the same as the canonical URL.
og:typewebsite for most pages, article for blog posts and news.
og:site_nameThe name of your website.
og:image:altA short description of the image for screen reader users.

A minimal, complete set looks like this in the page's <head>:

<meta property="og:title" content="Your page title">
<meta property="og:description" content="A short summary.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/share.png">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page/">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">

Do Open Graph tags help SEO?

Not directly: Google doesn't use them for ranking. They affect how often shared links are clicked, which drives traffic, brand searches and the chance of earning links. A clear image and headline can make a big difference to how a link performs in social feeds and group chats.

Refreshing an old preview

Platforms cache previews, so a page shared before you fixed its tags may keep showing the old version for a while. Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector let you request a fresh copy; this checker always fetches the page live, so use it to confirm the fix first.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an og:image be?

At least 1200 by 630 pixels, about a 1.91:1 shape, and under 5 MB. Smaller images may appear as a small thumbnail instead of a large preview.

Why does Facebook show the wrong image?

The page may have no og:image, several og:image tags, an image that fails to load, or Facebook may still be using an old cached copy. Fix the tags, check them here, then refresh the link in Facebook's Sharing Debugger.

Where do I add Open Graph tags in WordPress?

SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO, Rank Math and All in One SEO add them automatically and let you set a custom image and text for each post in the post editor's social tab.

Do WhatsApp and LinkedIn use Open Graph?

Yes. WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, iMessage and most messaging apps read Open Graph tags to build link previews.
